Children young people and parents
The views of children, young people, parents and carers in Islington are important to us.
We have a specialist Participation Officer in the Children’s Health Commissioning Team who provides support to children, young people, parents and carers to have their voices heard to help us to improve health services. We also have a range of opportunities for you to get involved with. These opportunities are primarily voluntary based and you are able to choose what is best suited to your skills, interests and availability. The opportunities are set out below.
Islington’s Lead Young People’s Health Group
This is a group of young people who meet regularly to learn about how health services work, and to have their say about the improvements they would like to see to make health services work better for them. They will also have the opportunity lead on events, activities and workshops that are aimed at informing their peers on topics relating to their health and well-being.
We have special meetings about particular long-term conditions, such as asthma, epilepsy and diabetes to discuss how to improve the way health care is provided for people with these conditions. Young people and parents are invited to be part of these groups.
SEND Children and Young People consultants
We currently have the opportunity for you to become a Special Educational Needs (SEND) Children and Young People (CYP) Consultant. This will entail:
- Responding to consultations on live issues or proposed developments (e.g. improvements to or short breaks offer)
- Agreeing and choose content in the proposed local offers
- Giving feedback or raising any issues or concerns that you think may relate to peers
- Informing us about any ways you think services you use could be improved
- Giving your views on age or phase specific developments (e.g. early years’ provision, services for children with hearing impairment, transition to adulthood)
- Volunteering to participate in ongoing training and meetings
CYP Participation Engagement Network
This group will run alongside the CYP Participation Network. The purpose of this group is to foster collaboration within the existing network of participation groups in the borough by meeting regularly to share plans and strategies. If you are a Participation Coordinator for Children and Young People and would like to join this network, please contact the Participation Officer using the details below.
We invite parents to sit on different groups where they can help make decisions about how health services can be improved. An example of this is our Children’s Service Improvement Group (CSIG). Here the CCG and local authority review strategy and commissioning to ensure it's providing what Islington’s children, young people, parents and carers need.
Surveys and Focus groups
Throughout the year we have short term opportunities, such as surveys or focus groups that we would like to invite you to take part in. We are currently developing a Sub CYP Participation group which will run alongside the Social and Emotional Mental Health service redesign steering group. This will give children and young people the opportunity to have a say regarding the future changes to our local CAMHS offer.
For more information on any of these opportunities please contact our Participation Officer, Maxine Adesina:
