Personal health budgets for children
As part of a national pilot, Islington is one of seven national locations working with children looked after, who have, or are at risk of developing, mental health needs.
We are focusing on three particular groups. These are:
- Care Leavers who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training)
- Children in care who have a mental health need but aren’t accessing CAMHS (Children and Adolescents’ Mental Health Services) or other mental health services
- Children in care who have an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan)
We will identify children and young people for Choice and Control from information held by Islington Council.
What does Choice and Control look like?
Your social worker will talk to you about Choice and Control if we think that you might benefit.
If you want to take part, you will be asked to complete a plan, where you can say: how you are feeling, what is important to you, what it is you’d like to achieve and how you think you can achieve it. The main thing is that you take the lead in saying what you think and feel.
You can complete the plan with your social worker, with someone else that you choose, or on your own.
Some people who take part in Choice and Control may receive a personal budget. These funds are available to purchase goods and services that you have identified will help you achieve your goals and improve your emotional wellbeing.
What is different about Choice and Control?
One of the main differences with Choice and Control is thinking more creatively about what might help you. Usually with health and social care you will be told what will help you – with Choice and Control, you tell us what you think will help you.
Quite often with Choice and Control, people will think of things that we might not have been able to help with in the past. Some people have used Choice and Control to pay for singing lessons, drama lessons, art/photography equipment, sports or exercise classes or equipment, or to even purchase a bicycle.
Choice and Control is about helping you achieve the outcomes and goals that you want to achieve.
